Howard Murdoch Gillis, 78, Arizona
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Howard Murdoch Gillis, formerly of North Sydney.
Howard was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 2001. He passed away on Dec. 1, 2009, in Tuscon, Ariz., from heart complications.
He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of John Peter and Catherine Sarah (MacKenzie) Gillis.
At age 16 Howard went to Montreal to become a Christian Brother but decided not to take final vows. He left for New York and later joined the U.S. Airforce. He married Gloria Irrey and they had one son, Robert. Howard spent 27 years in the military, stationed in Japan and the Azores with his family. He also spent time in Vietnam and the Phillipines. He retired in 1981 in Phoenix, Ariz. He lost his wife to cancer in 1988 and remarried in 1991. Howard and Beverly travelled and enjoyed life to the fullest. In recent years, Howard and Bev made several trips home. Howard loved his home town, and although Alzheimers robbed him of his memories of people and places, his love of Cape Breton fiddle music remained steadfast.
He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly; and his son, Robert, Arizona; a sister, Margaret (Tweet) Monroe, North Sydney; a brother, Joe Vincent, Toronto); and also several neices and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Gloria, brothers, AJ, Gussie and Archie, sisters, Flora, Theresa, Vonnie and Josie.
Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be brought home to Cape Breton for burial this summer.
