It is with sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our uncle, Peter Leo MacDonald, age 98, on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at Celtic Court, Sydney.
Peter was born in Scotch Lake, May 22, 1914, and was a longtime resident of north end in Sydney.
Peter was employed at the Scotch Lake Quarry, later with Canadian National Railways, until his retirement.
He was a member of Sacred Heart parish and an associate member of branch 12 Royal Canadian Legion, Sydney.
For the past year Peter was living at My Cape Breton Home, Westmount, and the family thanks Sherry, the staff and the residents for the excellent care given to Peter.
Peter was a diehard Toronto Maple Leaf and Blue Jays fan. Peter was independent and determined and was proud to live on his own until recently. He claimed to be the oldest person from Scotch Lake.
Peter was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He is survived by his nephews, Ronan, High Level, Alta., David Levionnois, Burlington, Ont.; sister-in-law, Theresa MacDonald, Port Colborne, Ont.; many grandnieces and grandnephews.
Predeceased by his parents, John C. and Penelope ‘Pansy’ (Walker) MacDonald, brothers, Malcolm (infant), Joseph (child), Malcolm F. (Kathryn), Sydney, Pius and Henry (Theresa), Port Colborne, Ont., sisters, Mary ‘Toots,’ Sydney, Josephine and Elizabeth, Scotch Lake, Jesse Ball (Billy), Burlington, Ont., Rita Levionnois (John), Port Colborne, Ont.
Special thanks to Peter’s primary caregivers for the last 13 years, nephew Cordell Ball and wife Helen, Sydney River.
Visitation for Peter will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, with Rev. Peter McLeod officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
A reception following the funeral will take place at branch 12 legion, Sydney.
