JONES, EVELYN - Evelyn Fortune Jones, who was born May 16, 1918 in New Brunswick, Canada and was raised in Nova Scotia, Canada died Sunday, August 12th at 1:10pm. She was the only child of the late William A. Fortune and Adeline B. MacDonald of Brookline, Massachusetts. The early part of her education was received in Massachusetts. Following her mother’s death, she lived in Nova Scotia with a beloved grand aunt and uncle. After finishing her education she left for the city of her dreams, Montreal, Canada, where she found employment at the Head office of the Canadian Car and Foundry Company. While there, she received an appointment to the British Army Staff Headquarters in Washington, DC, and stayed until the end of the War. While working she enrolled in George Washington University to continue her studies. She took off a year to join the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Agency (UNRRA) where she was stationed in the Athens, Greece headquarters. Upon returning to Washington, DC, and completing her studies she met and married E. Craig Jones Jr. of Smithfield, (a law student) and was married in 1948. They settled in Selma, North Carolina where Craig practiced law until April 15, 1997 and where they raised four children. While in Selma, Evelyn was employed with W. Jack Hooks, District Prosecutor until Hooks received a Judgeship. Afterwards, she worked with her husband in his law practice and obtained her Real Estate License in 1972 and kept it up until 2003. She was active in St. Ann’s Catholic Church, serving as a Lecturer, Eucharist Minister and in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where she supported her husband in his church activities. Evelyn was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Johnston Memorial Hospital, the Johnston Contact Telephone Ministry and the Johnston County Arts Council. She was an active member of the Friends of the College Concert Series, a Docent at the N.C. Museum of Art and served a term on the Selma Library Board and was a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. She is preceded in death by her husband E. Craig Jones Jr., her daughter, Pamela M. Jones and her son, Everitt Craig Jones III. Surviving are Everitt’s wife, Betty P. Jones, her son William Fortune Jones and wife, Linda M. Jones of Wilmington, NC, and her daughter Evelyn J. Costelloe and husband James A. Costelloe of Emmaus, PA, grandchildren: Craig Jones and his wife Leanne L. Jones of Four Oaks, NC., Elizabeth Fay Evans and her husband Blake Evans of Four Oaks, NC., Christina F. Jones of New York, Cara F. Costelloe of Philadelphia, PA and Mary P. Costelloe of Emmaus, PA.
