Marie Shearer
SHEARER, MARIE H. - Marie Hazel Shearer passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 28th, 2012 at The Moncton Hospital following a lengthy illness. Born in Woodstock, NB on April 7th, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Milne and Dorothy (Greer) Tapley. Marie was a long-term resident of Peoples Park Tower and thoroughly enjoyed the community life she found there. Over the years she was an active participant in many of the organized activities at the Tower, especially line dancing and Tai Chi, to name but a few. In her later years at the Tower, Marie enjoyed her nightly card games with her friends in the lounge. As well, Marie and her husband John were very active curlers and lawn bowlers for many years in Moncton. Throughout her life Marie contributed greatly to both her country and her community. She served with the Canadian Army during the Second World War, and for many years was a volunteer with the RCMP. Perhaps what best characterized Marie was her generous and caring spirit not only to her close friends but to all who needed a favour or a helping hand. Marie will be sadly missed by her two sons; Roger A. Hughes (Joan) of MD, and Frederick P. A. Hughes (Debbie Hill) of NH, grandson Roger A. Hughes of NC; great grandsons Jonathan and Kevin Hughes of NC, sister-in-law Harriett Tapley of Woodstock; several nieces and nephews in NB. As well, for many, many years Marie became an “adopted” member of the Bourgeois family and enjoyed many Christmases, birthdays and family gatherings - and they too will miss her dearly. Apart from her parents, Marie was predeceased by her first husband Urban C. Hughes and her second husband John A. Shearer; her sister Shirley Tapley Miller; brother Frederick “Bud” Hughes. For her 24 years at Peoples Park Tower, Marie’s closest and constant companion, Jean, predeceased in November, 2012 and Marie was so very grateful for the wonderful times they shared over the years. They were to each other the kind of friend that a friend should be. The family would like to thank the staff of 4600 at the Moncton Hospital and We Care Health Services for the care and kindness they showed Marie during her lengthy stay at the hospital this past year. As well, special thanks to Gloria and Willa for all their help and kindness during Marie’s illness.
There will be no visitation prior to the Memorial Service to be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, September 9th 2012 at Fair Haven Funeral Home. A reception for Marie’s friends and family will follow the service in the Garden View Reception Room. Interment in the Woodstock Cemetery at a later date. Donations may be made to The Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
