Rannie Gillis, a former resident of Pellett Avenue, New Waterford, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, Rannie was the son of the late Martin and Agnes (McMullin) Gillis.
Rannie was a member of the former Mt. Carmel Church. He was a devout Catholic. Rannie served with the Royal Canadian Air Force and spent time in Germany as a peacekeeper. He taught school at various community colleges throughout his lifetime. Rannie loved history, in particular, The American Civil War. He also was an avid sports fan, especially enjoying, baseball, football and hockey. But mostly, Rannie will be remembered as a man of faith, a man who was kind, thoughtful and had a great sense of humour.
Rannie is survived by his wife, Florence 'Flossie' (MacIntyre) Gillis, Sydney; a daughter, Karen Gillis Lowe (Paul), Antigonish; three sons, Glen (Jane Anne), Westmount, Joseph (Marina), Portage, Ronald 'Randy' (Melody), Maine; two sisters, Phemie Reid, Glace Bay, Agnes (Fred) Mombourquette, New Glasgow and seven grandchildren, Kayleigh, Sarah, Shane, Dean, Bhreagh, Katie and Brydie. Rannie will also be deeply missed by his beloved nieces and nephews.
Rannie was predeceased by a daughter, Sandra in infancy; three brothers, Eddie, Angus, Stanley and three sisters, Millie, Mayme and Theresa.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Ray Huntley is Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. in St. Leonard Church followed by interment in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. All are invited to join the family for a reception at St. Leonard Hall on Convent Street.
As an expression of sympathy for Rannie, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Alzheimer's Association.
