MURPHY, AUBREY J., C.D. - North Atlantic Veteran - On September 29, six days before his 93rd birthday, at the Perley-Rideau Veterans Health Centre, Ottawa. Native of Saint John, NB, predeceased by his wife, Edna Gilmour, parents Lawrence Murphy and Anne Wallace, sister Doris (John) Stanton of Halifax, brothers Donald (Connie) and Frank (Audrey) of Saint John, and twin brother Larry of Comox BC. Survived by his brothers James, S.J. , of Pickering, and Barry of Hesperia CA. Survived by his six children: Anne (Andy Dumoulin), Robert of Regina, Barry (Pamela), Patricia (Robert Murrell), Jane and Ruth; 13 grandchildren: Ronald (Kate), Andre, Jessica, Angel (Bill), James, Ryan, Andrea (Adam), Sarah-Jane (Tovy), Jennifer (Geoff), Robert, Marie, Chantal (Steven), Jean-Pierre; and seven great-grandchildren: Elizabeth, Alexandre, Mayla, Kassahun, Mariye, Maximus and Aubrey Cyrus. At the start of WWII, Aubrey and his twin brother Larry volunteered for service in the Royal Canadian Navy, both saw service in the Battle of the Atlantic, and both achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer (now Chief Warrant Officer). When the war ended, Aubrey married the love of his life, Edna Gilmour (daughter of Robert Gilmour and Ella Smith) and moved to Ottawa. They raised their six children in Aylmer, Quebec. Aubrey worked over 30 years in the civil service, retiring from the International Joint Commission in 1982. He spent his final years in the veterans’ wing of the Perley-Rideau Veterans Health Centre and the family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Ottawa 2 East for the wonderful care and love they lavished on their father.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Perley Rideau Foundation or the Parkinson’s Society of Canada. In memory of our father, please never forget the debt we owe to all veterans.
