On Wednesday October 10, 2012, Edward John O'Brien, surrounded by family.
Survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Irene (O'Riordan); his children, Trina (Mark Leggott) and John (Tanya), Charlottetown; Peter (Lise), Anglemont, B.C.; Caroline (Ian Trites), Toronto; Miriam (Paul Sedge), Ottawa; fond Grandad to Jennifer (Mike), Kelly (Tim), Maia (Jamie), Conor (Ashley), Alex, Ceilidh, Katie, Clare, Hannah, Alex and Jonah; and 4 great-grandchildren. He will be missed too by his brother, Neil (Ann); sisters, Joan O'Connell and Agnes (Frank Devins); brothers-in-law, Tom O'Riordan (Kathleen), Ted O'Riordan (Maureen) and Con Danaher; and sisters-in-law, Mary Mould (Ian) and Margaret O'Brien; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, especially Fr. Kieran O'Brien, Killarney, Ireland.
Predeceased by his parents, John and Hannah O'Brien; son, Edward; brother, Brendan; sister, Maureen; and brother-in-law, Morgan O'Connell.
Born June 21, 1930 at Doon, Tralee, Co. Kerry, Ireland, Dad told many stories of his school days, his handball and Gaelic football exploits, and his early working days at Traly Footwear. He was admitted an Associate of the British Boot and Shoe Institution in Northampton, England, and received the Swaysland Commemoration Diploma for Excellence, a source of great pride. He worked for many years as a shoe designer and factory manager in England, Ireland and Canada. Retiring from Hartt Shoes in Fredericton, he spent happy years visiting his children across Canada, and returning regularly to Ireland. He taught his grandchildren to play a mean game of crib, and delighted in family games.
Resting at Belvedere Funeral Home until Monday at 9:45 a.m., then to St. Pius X Church for funeral mass at 10 a.m. Interment in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Charlottetown. There will be no public visitation.
We would like to thank the caring and compassionate staff at the Q.E.H. in Charlottetown. Your many kindnesses are much appreciated.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Q.E.H. Foundation.
