Passed in: SYDNEY, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: October 24th, 2012
William (Bill) Gillis Sampson passed away on October 24, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, encircled by his loving family. He was 71 years old.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late William and Margaret (Peggy) Gillis. For nearly 39 years, he was the devoted and loving husband of Joan (McNally) Sampson. He made clear to everyone, especially their children, that he was her biggest fan and considered himself a very lucky man indeed.
Bill was a health inspector with the Nova Scotia Department of Health and later the Department of Environment. He was an avid volunteer and served on the board of directors of various organizations throughout the region, including Loaves and Fishes and the Steel Centre Credit Union. He was a president of the Nova Scotia Government Retired Employees' Association. A longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Sydney River, Bill served on its Lazarus Committee for many years.
He was our Beaver leader, our first soccer coach, our lifeguard, our supporter, our protector. He was the person who loved us most and judged us least. We will love him and miss him forever.
Bill Sampson is survived by his loving wife, Joan, by his children, William, Marina (Sukh Dial), Paul and Philip (Jenn Brown), and by his granddaughters, Avery and Nora Dial.
A funeral service will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church on Saturday, October 27, at 10 a.m., with reception to follow at the church.
Donations in Bill’s memory may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre.
