BENVIE, Edward Dean “Ed” – 94, Hilden/Bible Hill. Edward was called home on Tuesday evening, October 30, 2012, at Vimy Court, Bible Hill. Born April 3, 1918, Upper Stewiacke, he was a son of the late John and Olivia (Dean) Benvie. Edward worked on the family farm and in the woods until the outbreak of the Second World War. He then joined the Army and was stationed in Cape Breton and Newfoundland. While stationed in Cape Breton, he met and married Laurina Manzine. After Newfoundland, they were stationed in Wolfville. When the war ended, they made their home in Hilden where they raised their eight children. They were the last family in this community to run the train station. Ed started in the carpentry business and pursued this career until he was 80. In retirement years, he enjoyed going to the horse races, gardening, fishing, traveling and whittling wood pieces for family and friends. He was a veteran of the Second World War and long-time member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, Truro. Edward is survived by his sons, Sonny (Nancy), Hilden; Garfield (Shelley), Truro Heights; Victor (Kathy), Brookside; Doug (Sandra), Hilden; daughters, Judy Roode, Truro; Olly Jane Richards, Truro; Rhoda McWilliam, Greenfield; 22 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; brother, Grant (Kay) Benvie, Truro; sister, Elizabeth Allen, Sydney; sister-in-law, Vi Benvie, Saskatoon numerous nieces and nephews; special friend and caregiver, Lisa. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Laurina Ida Manzine; daughter, Erma Jean MacCallum; great grandson, Owen Wheaton-McWilliam; twin-sister, Erma Adams; twin siblings, Jimmy and Lillian Benvie, siblings, Margaret (Roy) Graham, Gussie (Donald) Burnett, Irene (Karl) Fleck, Walter Benvie, Phyllis Hatt; two brothers in infancy; son-in-law, Johnny Roode; brother-in-law, Bill Allen. All are welcome to attend a graveside service that will be held 4:30 p.m., Friday, November 2, 2012, in Hilden Cemetery, across from 1805 Highway 2, Hilden, Reverend Morley Bentley officiating. Reception will follow at Hilden Fire Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ed’s memory to Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, Truro (Poppy Fund) are welcomed. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro.
