Lenwood (Lennie) Burris

PICTOU – Lenwood (Lennie) Burris, 92, Pictou, passed away peacefully at the Shiretown Nursing Home on Sunday, November 4, 2012.
Born in Old Barns, he was the son of the late Fred and Lucy (Dartt) Burris.
As a young man he worked as a carpenter before going to work on his brother-in-law’s farm in Onslow. He was a veteran of the Second World War, enlisting in 1941 and serving with Bomber Command in England from 1942 to 1945 as an Aero engine mechanic. In 1948 he married Audrey Goode and, in 1952, moved to Balfron, near Tatamagouche where he farmed until 1980. Always active in the farming industry and in community affairs, he loved gardening and tended them faithfully and proudly for many years in retirement – to the delight of many people who came to buy his produce. He was much loved by his family and respected in his community, he was a proud, energetic and generous man with a wonderful sense of humor. It was his abiding faith, courage and the support of his beloved wife, however, that enabled him to bear the loss of his seven siblings and four of his five children.
He was predeceased by his wife, Audrey (2008); brothers: Laurie (Jean), Walter (Margaret), Jimmy (Sylvia); sisters, Ruth (Charlie) Bates, Mildred (Bill) Langille, Mabel, Maude (Clarence) Stevens; children Laurie and Laura (twins), Heather and Arlene; and granddaughter, Eve.
He is survived by his son, Brian (Jane), Pictou; grandsons: Mark, Adrian, Christopher (Emily) and Cory; and great-granddaughter, Alana.
Following his request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Thursday, November 8, 2012, at Coulter’s Funeral Home in Tatamagouche from 12 o’clock noon until 2 p.m. at which time the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 64, Tatamagouche, will conduct a Veteran’s tribute service, followed by a Service of Remembrance conducted by Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarity. Following the service there will be a reception at the Royal Canadian Legion in Tatamagouche. Internment will take place at the Falls Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Lennie’s memory may be made to the Pictou United Church or a charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank Dr. Gordon Young, the emergency department at the Aberdeen Hospital, and, especially, the staff at the Shiretown Nursing Home, Pictou, for their care and support. Thanks to his many friends and relatives who have sent messages of love and comfort.
