John MacDougall

Born In: SYDNEY, Nova Scotia, Canada
Born: September 9th, 1951

Passed on: November 6th, 2012

On Tuesday, November 6, 2012, our dear brother, John, passed from this life at the Northern Lights Regional Hospital in Fort McMurray. John was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on September 9, 1951.
John grew up in Sydney and attended Sydney Academy and St. F.X. College before completing his Education Degree from Dalhousie University in 1976. At that time he moved to Alberta to pursue employment with the Fort McMurray Catholic School Board. He lived his life and relished his time educating young minds for 37 years. Students referred to him as Mr. Mac and many who had the privilege to be in his class have fond memories of him being a disciplinarian with a soft touch and strong faith.
He was a long time parishioner at St. John the Baptist Church and an active member of the Alberta Teachers Association. After his retirement from full time teaching John continued to serve the Good Shepherd Community School by volunteering and subbing when called upon. He also supervised exams and did invigilating for Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.
Cherishing their memories are his sisters, Sally Prosser (George), Marilyn Redshaw, Patricia Field and Donna Martell (Bill) of Sydney, Nova Scotia, Elizabeth A (Betty Ann) of Calgary and Veronica (Bonnie) of Edmonton Alberta; his brothers, Charlie of Kentville, Nova Scotia, Duncan of Waltham, Mass., USA, and Peter of Riverview, New Brunswick; his many nieces and nephews, a host of good friends and his special kitty and companion Danielle.
John was predeceased by his parents, John and Anne and beloved sisters Mary McGarry and Kate MacNeill.
Our family wishes to thank Dr. Johan Van Heerde for his uncompromising care and compassion given to John throughout his illness. The nurses and Dr. Tomey of the Medicine Unit have earned their wings helping John along his journey.
A mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday Nov 12, 2012 at 6:00PM at St. John the Baptist Church, 5 Hospital Street, Fort McMurray, Alberta. In lieu of flowers, it was John's wish to request donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the charity of one’s choice.
John's ashes will be taken home to Cape Breton at a later date and we will hold a memorial service at that time. He will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery where other family members are awaiting him. Rest in Peace Gentle Man….You are so loved.
