John Henry Ross, age 88 of Ellershouse, Hants County, passed away on Monday, November 12, 2012, at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born on May 10, 1924, in St. Croix, Hants County, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Harry and Gladys (Spence) Ross. John served in the Canadian Air Force during the Second World War, and was a member of the Bedford Branch No.95, Royal Canadian Legion, Bedford. Most of his working life, he was employed with Municipal Contracting in Bedford in various positions including manager of the Rocky Lake Esso. John enjoyed playing hockey, softball and in later years, horseshoes where he won many local and provincial awards. He was a member of the West Hants Wildlife Association and assisted with ‘The Learn to Fish’ program for school children at the St. Croix Lake. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with family at the camp in Piney. He spent many years coaching hockey and ball and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren in their sports. The last number of years, he spent countless hours volunteering at the St. Croix Ballfield. He was a member of the St. Louise United Church, Ellershouse. John is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Helen M. Spence; sons, Stephen (Kathy), Lakelands; Gary (Nancy), Brooklyn; grandsons, Justin (Michelle); Adam (Noel); granddaughter, Laura (Ryan); step granddaughters, Sarah (Devon) Tracey; Jillian (Travis) Tracey; great grandson, Riley John, his “little buddy”, who was the light of his life these last months; brother, Robert (Maxine), Windsor; sister, Vivian Howell, Falmouth; and many nieces and nephews. Besides parents, he was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Heather; brother, Robie and a sister, Jessie Beach. A memorial service was 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 14, 2012, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home Chapel, 194 King Street, Windsor. The Rev. Wendy Kean and Rev. Garnet Parker officiated. A private family interment in the Ste. Croix Cemetery, St. Croix, followed by a reception at the Brooklyn Civic Centre, 995 Highway 215, Brooklyn. Family flowers only. Donations in memory of John were requested to be made to the Windsor Elms Village Chaplaincy Fund or a charity of one’s choice.
