John Irvine Bickerton, son of Irvine and Carolyn Bickerton was born in 1927, and died on Nov. 16, 2012, at the Cove Guest Home in Sydney surrounded by his family.
Although John was born in Amherst he loved our island and saw himself as a true Cape Bretoner.
John is survived by his wife, Evelyn (nee Rice); sons, Alexander, James (Teresa), Robert (Dude), Kenneth (Dar); and daughter, Janet (John); grandchildren, Neil, Ben, Luke, Paul and Lydia and his siblings, Ruth, Margaret, Barbara, Robert, Carman, and Jim ‘Bick’.
John was predeceased by his son, Paul who died in 1980 at the age of 25.
John was a good man. He was a caring husband and father and a wonderful friend to many. John quietly cared for others when help was needed and he brightened the day for many with his smiles and laughter. John worked in the insurance business for over 50 years. A true hockey ‘nut’, he dragged kids and gear all over the country, especially loving his hockey years with his now gone buddies Mackie, Campy and Porky.
John, with his wife Evelyn, worked hard to ensure his six children had a good education and a good start in life and we thank Dad so much for his dedication and commitment to our family.
We will miss his beautiful brown eyes but are so thankful for his 85 years.
We thank the Cove staff and volunteers for providing a wonderful home for John for the past five years and for their compassion during his passing.
A gathering will be held at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., on Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with a funeral service on Wednesday at the United Baptist Church, Charlotte Street, Sydney, at 11 a.m. with a lunch to follow. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Festival of Lights Campaign at the Cove would be appreciated.
