Sheila Catherine Aylward (Griffin)

Passed on: November 21st, 2012

On Wednesday, November 21, 2012, our mom passed away, one month short of her 83rd birthday. Mom we love you and we will miss you very much, thanks for all the memories. Sheila was the youngest child of Thomas and Agnes Griffin and leaves to mourn her sister Jean O’Brien (Jack), sister-in-law Eileen Ryan (Bill) and Lilly Griffin (Ron). Sheila belonged to a large, close family with eight other siblings, who grew up on Colliers Lane, off Forest Road (Mary, Jack Griffin (Carmel), Margaret Ennis (Lou), Anne Buckle (Jim), Gertrude MacLeod (Don), Martin Griffin, Gerald Griffin (all deceased). When this time comes for all of us and you are asked, who was your mother; it can be a daunting question. Your mind floods with memories and events, and then goes blank. Mom was born in St. John’s and graduated from the Sisters of Presentation school for girls, went on to do commercial and began a career at the US Forces Base at Pleasantville. It was there she met and fell in love with Francis (Frank); they married in 1955 and made a home for their three children Matthew (Bronda-Lee), Carolyn (Roman) and Tony (Donna) in Kilbride. Mom returned to work at Ayres & Sons in 1970 where she remained until they closed. Mom lived at home until late 2012 when she moved to the S.A. Glenbrook Lodge. Mom your final days were silenced by a stroke but you always smiled and enjoyed a good joke. You confronted life’s final stage with dignity and went quietly in the night. Your many nephews and nieces enjoyed your company at family gatherings over the years. You are loved and will be sadly missed by your six grand-children (Catherine, Gregory, Rebecca, Andrew, Michael, and Dominic). Good-bye Mom from all of us. We take comfort knowing you are with dad and our God in heaven. Resting at Caul’s, visitation hours are Thursday, November 22 (2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.) and Friday (2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.). Christian burial will be Saturday from Mary, Queen of the World Parish at 9:30 a.m. with interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
