BURROUGHS, Elizabeth (“Bets”, “Betsy”) Bennet - 86, died peacefully at her home early Sunday morning, November 25, 2012, after a fifteen year battle with ovarian cancer. A long-time winter resident of Vermont and summer resident of Sandy Cove on Digby Neck, she was born in San Francisco on October 25, 1926 to Helen (Victors) and Richard Wilson Bennet. Growing up, she lived in Short Hills, NJ and St. Louis, MO. She enjoyed summers at Camp Arcadie in Sandy Cove. Betsy was a 1948 graduate of Vassar College, where she majored in mathematics. She married the late Dr. Ralph Burnaby Burroughs in 1951. They lived in Birmingham, AL for 12 years, where their five children were born. The family relocated to Dr. Burroughs’ hometown of Swift Current, Saskatchewan in 1964. In 1965, Betsy and her children stayed in Digby, Nova Scotia with devoted friends from Camp Arcadie, the late Mrs. Helen Anthony and the late Miss Marjorie McCormick, before moving to Vermont in 1966. While completely engaged as a full time mother to her five children, she worked part-time at the UVM bookstore, as a substitute teacher, and as summer counselor and nurse at Camp Arcadie. From 1974 to 1989, she taught math at the Laraway School in Johnson, a school for children in challenging family or academic circumstances. Her duties included canoeing, winter camping, and backpacking with the students. She was an accomplished knitter, an avid bridge player, and a dedicated rug hooker. Bets married Thomas D. Sachs, PhD., in 1988. Together, they enjoyed many years of summers in Sandy Cove and winters in Vermont. Dr. Sachs died in 2009. Elizabeth is survived by her five children, Anne Giordani (Bruno) of Ann Arbor MI; Susan Burroughs (Thomas Soltis) of Simsbury CT; Margaret Burroughs of New York City; Barbara Burroughs (Joel Goldberg) of Shelburne VT; and Harold Burroughs (Ann) of St. Louis; and eleven grandchildren, Helen and James Giordani; Jennifer and Heather Soltis; Joseph and Benjamin Wlody; Eli and Rubin Goldberg; and Charles, Timothy, and Margaret (“Molly”) Burroughs. She was very proud of them all and her desire to see them grow up helped her through her prolonged illness. Betsy is also survived by her brother, Richard W. Bennet Jr., her cousins, Gloria Brown (Bob) and Barbara Duryea, her dear friend, Pat Everett (Al), and several nieces and nephews. Her devoted pets, Jodi and Croney, survive her as well. Elizabeth and her family wish to relay special thanks to the communities in Nova Scotia from which she drew so much strength and love. A memorial service was held at on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at the First Congregational Church in Essex Junction. Interment will be in Sandy Cove during the summer of 2013. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Patient Support Program of Vermont, PO Box 64700, Burlington VT 05406 or the Church of the Nativity, General Delivery, Sandy Cove, Nova Scotia B0V 1E0.
