Earl Small

SMALL, CAPT. EARL DONALD - (1944 – 2012) - Captain Earl D. Small of North Head Grand Manan Island passed away at the Grand Manan Hospital on December 3, 2012. He was born at Digby, NS the son of the late Blanche (Tidd) and Fletcher Small. Following High School in the early 1960’s Earl found his passion on the sea. He lobster fished, worked on tug boats, went fish dragging, and worked in the Beaufort Sea on supply ships for oil exploration in the 1970’s. Later he went into partnership and ran a freighter from the Caribbean, South America, to West Africa, and even hauled potatoes out of Bayside, NB. His distinguished career of Captain came to an end in the late 80’s after acquiring Malaria in Africa. Earle was high spirited, active and a well-liked person; his nickname" Squirrel" described him well and he will be missed dearly by all who knew him. He is survived by his daughter Connie (Jeffrey) Hart of Fredericton, NB, one sister Janice Small of North Head, NB. Three brothers; Stanley (Arlene) Small of Browns Flat, NB, Gregory (Ronna) Small, and Merrill (Laura) Small both of North Head. Also his former wife Marjorie Harris, two grandchildren Miranda and Alexander. Many nieces, nephews and friends he has made along the way. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his two sons Randy and Dean.
Visiting will take place from Ells Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will take place from the North Head Wesleyan Church on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at 1:00 pm with Rev. Gary Campbell officiating and Rev. Jasper Rideout assisting. The Interment will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery. Earl’s family has requested that donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
