James 'Jimmy' Sutherland

It is with great sadness that we, the family of James ‘Jimmy’ Sutherland of Heelan Street, New Waterford, announce his peaceful passing on Dec. 14, 2012, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Jimmy was born in New Waterford, the son of the late Joseph (Buddy) and Catherine ‘Kaye’ (MacDonald) Sutherland.
Jimmy worked as a coal miner in Lingan, Phalen and Prince collieries until 1995 when he retired after numerous injuries. Jimmy was always there to lend a helping hand and spent many hours using his carpentry skills to help out many friends and family over the years.
Jimmy was an avid athlete playing hockey, baseball, soccer, golf, curling, bowling and darts. He played for the New Waterford Jets, Sydney Millionaires and Kitchener Rangers (OHL) hockey teams and enjoyed many years of fun curling at the Schooner Curling Club in Sydney (Radar Base). His favourite teams were the Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion branch 15 New Waterford. In recent years he enjoyed his time volunteering with the Mount Carmel Joy Program and with the LSC Program at Breton Education Centre and enjoying a good game of cards with his buddies.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Debbie (MacDonald) and two children, Chris, Halifax, and Sherri (Derek), Sydney; brothers, Joseph (Yvonne), Kitchener, Ont., Neil (Bonnie), Calgary, Alta., Patrick (Jane), Goderich, Ont., Francis (Kelly), Berwick, N.S.; sisters, Yvonne (John) Donovan, Mary (Wayne) Gillis, both of New Waterford, and Cathy (John) Fitzgerald, Houston, Tex.; in-laws, Vindy and Ada MacDonald; brothers-in-law, Vince (Lynn), Mark (Jolane), Rocky Mountain House, Alta., Brad (Laura), Ronnie (Sandi), New Waterford; many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews and friends. He will be greatly missed by all.
Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, 10 a.m. at the Parish of Saint Leonard with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial in Saint Agnes Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the KOC. All are welcome.
Arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500.
We would like to thank the nursing staff of the medical floor of the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital for their excellent care and compassion during the last few months of Jimmy’s illness.
