Born: January 12th, 1942

Passed on: December 30th, 2012

It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Sarah ‘Sally’ Margaret MacDonald, our mother, wife, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. After a lengthy battle with cancer, Sally peacefully went into God’s hands, surrounded by her loving family holding her hands, at home on Dec. 30, 2012.
Born in Sydney, Jan. 12, 1942, she was the daughter of the late John Rory and Jemina ‘Mina’ Nash of Iona and Washabuck.
Mom was proud to have been a student of the first graduating class of the Cape Breton Business College in 1959. She later went on to study at UCCB where she obtained her CIM – Canadian Institute of Management in 1987. Sally began working when she was 16 at the Bank of Commerce in Sydney River and retired eight years ago from the Department of Human Rights with the provincial government.
Mom had a love of crafts and could do anything with her hands. She could embroider, sew, crochet, knit, do ceramics and quilt. She loved to go for drives with her husband or simply sit in the sun house at the bungalow and look out at the water. Mom also loved to garden and the smell of fresh sheets coming off the line in winter and in summer. The light of her life were her two grandsons, Ethan and Aidan. Right to the end Mom’s eyes would light up and she would smile when they entered the room.
Sally is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Clarence MacDonald; two daughters, Jean (Alan) Stanwick, Northside East Bay, Janice MacDonald, Sydney; grandsons, Ethan and Aidan Stanwick, Northside East Bay, and granddog Sandy. Sally is also survived by her three sisters, Rachel (Kenny) Bourget, Montreal, Josie (William) Kyte, Sydney, and Jean Petrie, Sydney; and brother-in-law, Tony Petrie, Sydney. She leaves behind loving nieces and nephews, Darlene Kyte, Sydney, Darrell (Sarah) Kyte, Halifax, Laura (Dave) Currie, Sydney, Kelly Bourget, Montreal, and Christopher Petrie, Sydney. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews by marriage.
She was predeceased by her nephews, John Kyte in infancy and Shawn Bourget, Montreal, and many uncles and aunts including her aunt Sister Agnes Nash, CND.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. A funeral mass officiated by Fr. Norman MacPhee will be held at the funeral home chapel at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 3 and the family will host a reception following the service at the funeral home. Burial will take place following the reception at Resurrection Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff of the Palliative Care Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital and the VON nursing staff for their wonderful care. We would also like to thank Mom’s sisters and friends who supported and cared for our mother and wife during her illness.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit, CBRH.
