JEAN MACKEY

Passed on: January 13th, 2013

Jean Eleanor Mackey (nee Aitken) of Moose Jaw passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at the age of 97 years. Jean was born at Eyebrow, Saskatchewan on April 2, 1915 to Thomas and Lenora Aitken. She was the third of four children and the only girl. After completing high school, Jean attended Normal School and taught school for six years in various rural Saskatchewan schools. In 1940 she moved to Moose Jaw and was employed for three years at the T. Eaton Company. Jean married Michael Joseph (Mickey) Mackey, a well-known Moose Jaw policeman on December 29, 1943. Jean was an active member of the Canadian Red Cross, YWCA Guild, Beta Sigma Phi, K-ettes, and the Hospital Auxiliaries. She was an avid sports fan, who throughout her life followed baseball and curling as well as many other sports. This interest grew as she followed Mickey's and Tom's activities. She is survived by her son Tom and wife Dana in Nanaimo, B.C. and the four daughters they share: Dawn, Julie, Janice and Kirsten and their families including great-grandson, Ben and great-granddaughters Isabella, Kennedy and Grace; sister-in-law, Roberta (Muir); four nieces: Bette Ann, Lennie, Janet, Elizabeth and one nephew, Malcolm and their families. Jean was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Lenora; infant daughter, Barbara Jean; husband Mickey; brother Cleave and wife Rita (Langdon); brother Lawrence and wife Jean (Tovey); and brother Lewis (Bud). The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Pioneer Lodge Staff who cared for Jean for nine and a half years; as well as to the medical and dental community that served her needs. Also, a special thank you to Rose Mary Hartney, who was like a daughter to Jean, and who has provided a great deal of support for many years. Funeral Services will be held at a later date. In memory of Jean, donations may be made to the CNIB, 2550 Broad Street, Regina, SK. S4P 3Z4, to the Pioneer Lodge Activity Department or to a charity of choice. In living memory of Jean, a memorial planting will be made by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. Please sign the memorial register book at website: www.wjjonesandson.com (Obituaries).
