Passed on: February 12th, 2013

SCHMIDT: Ronald Edward Schmidt passed away on February 12, 2013 at the Cypress Regional Hospital, surrounded by loving family and friends. He was predeceased by his mother and father Frances and Edward Schmidt, and his nephew Carman Winter. He is survived by his son Martin (Marty) Schmidt of Cochrane, AB; his daughter Luanne Schmidt of Calgary, AB.; his sister Elvina Winter of Coronach, SK; his nephew Warren (Brenda) Winter of Buffalo Pound; his cousins Glen (Judy) Schmidt of Athabasca, AB.; Garth (Heather) Schmidt of Lethbridge, AB and numerous other relatives. Ron was born in Coronach, SK on June 17, 1943. He started his working life as a heavy equipment operator and later went to Tech School in Saskatoon. He took up plumbing and sheet metal work as a career and, in later years, "Rockin' Ronnie" worked as a courier, delivering many parcels and hearty laughs across southern SK. The family moved to Swift Current in 1970, where Ron enjoyed a life of hard work, family, friends, fishing and boating at Lac Pelletier, wood working, making his delicious homemade apple strudel or raspberry jam, tending to his colorful pots of flowers around his yard, and joking with the boys on coffee row. Ron truly enjoyed working along side his son Marty, repairing and modifying vehicles, working on the boat, watching the races at the track, pulling Marty behind the boat for skiing and barefooting, cruising around town in the race car and burning rubber on the back roads on the edge of town. He also very much enjoyed each and every birthday shared with his daughter Luanne, both being born on June 17th. They would spend that week at the lake, and indulge in chocolate cake and coffee for breakfast on their special day. An enormous perch feed would follow later on when they came in off the water after fishing, and occasionally, when their birthday landed on Father’s Day, it would feel that much more special. The Funeral Service was held Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Alpine Church of God with Pastor Stacey Ellertson officiating. The organist was Sharon Penny. Pallbearers where Frank Klassen, J. D. Shaw, Kevin Pisiak, Kevin Schulties, Curtis Pilat, Tim Baiton and Jeff Mason. Honorary Pallbearers were Ron Hancock, Leonard Reimer, Norman Wiebe, Emile Lamontagne, Brian Berger and all who shared in Ron's life. The Interment Service will be held at St. John Cemetery, Coronach, SK at a later date. A heart felt thank you to Ron's family and friends who were with him in his final moments, CCU- Regina General Hospital Staff, especially nurse Louise, Cypress Regional Hospital staff, the Swift Current Care Centre staff, and all caregivers and friends who cared for, and loved Ron, while he battled Progressive Supra Nuclear Palsy (PSP), a progressive brain disorder for which there is no cure. Ron will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered. In his memory, memorial donations may be made to the Royal University Hospital Foundation, Movement Disorder Research, 103 Hospital Dr, Saskatoon, SK S7N 0W8 or the Lung Association of Saskatchewan, 1231 8th St. E. Saskatoon, SK S7H 0S5. Warren's Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
