John Howe Charlton - 93, of Berwick, passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at home. Born in Waterville, he was a son of the late Charles and Annie (Evans) Charlton. John started working in the bakery business in the Wolfville Holland Bakery before joining the army, serving overseas during the Second World War. Following the war, he worked with Berwick Bakery, then Eastern Bakery for a total of 37 years. John was an ardent curler and golfer and was a charter member of Berwick Heights Golf Course. He was also a charter member of the Berwick Lions Club and a retired member of the Berwick Fire Department. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Ortona Branch 69, Berwick, a charter member of Laurel Chapter Eastern Star and a member of Valley Lodge #90, Berwick where he received his 65 year jewel. Upon retirement, he and his wife, Cappy, spent 19 years wintering in Florida. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn “Cappy” Clarke; daughter, Linda (Mike) Moreash, Halifax; son, Brian (Celia) Charlton, Halifax; grandchildren, Matthew Moreash, Halifax; Rebecca Moreash, Halifax; Laura Charlton, Toronto; Andrew (Preety) Charlton, Burlington, Ontario; great granddaughter, Eira, Halifax; sister, Mary (Pat) Carroll, Alberta; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Hettie, Alice and Dorothy; brothers, Bill, Gordon and Victor. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. There will be no visitation, by request. A Masonic service, followed by a funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2013 in the Berwick Baptist Church, Reverend Marilyn Rose officiating, assisted by Reverend Leon Langille. A reception will follow in the Baptist Church Annex. Burial will take place at a later date. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Berwick Baptist Church or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
