It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our loving husband and father, Stewart (Pete) Mattoon Thorn, 69, of Brooklyn Avenue, Sydney Mines, on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013.
Born in West Springfield, Massachusetts, USA, on Sept. 28, 1943, he was the son of the late Ralph C. and Dorothy (Stewart) Thorn.
He was raised in Mt. Tabor, New Jersey, before moving to Nova Scotia in the 1960s.
He was a tool and dye maker by trade, and a recognized card played in the local area. He was an avid tarabish and poker player, who loved the company of his many card playing buddies. He loved the Brooklyn/LA Dodgers and American Flyer Trains. He was patient and kind to all he met, and will be forever remembered for this.
He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Ethel (Boutilier), and his son, Doug (Wendy). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Adam and Hannah; and his brother, Douglas Thorn, Fincastle, Va. Pete had many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends who will miss him dearly as well, particularly his cousins, James and Earl Stewart, and sister and brother-in-law Delores and Dave Howley.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by many aunts and uncles with whom he was quite close.
Visitation for Pete Thorn will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held Thursday, at 11 a.m. in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, with Rev. Ritchie Robinson officiating.
