Gerald McQuade

McQUADE, GERALD - The death of Gerald Joseph McQuade, eldest son of the late Arthur L. and Annie B. (Shepherd) McQuade occurred at the Palliative Care Unit of the Saint John Regional Hospital on February 26, 2013. Gerald (Gerry) was born at the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Cornwall Ontario on March 24, 1942. Shortly thereafter he and his family returned to Bath and then to Saint John where his father managed the St. Patrick’s Orphanage farm. He loved his life on the farm- the people, the work and the animals. He met lifelong friends from the Orphanage and spoke dearly of Sisters who lived there. Gerald worked at the Saint John Dry Dock as a crane operator until 1966 when a motor vehicle accident changed his life forever. Although confined to a wheelchair Gerald lived a full and active life. He was a great storyteller who enjoyed wildlife, NASCAR and local stockcar racing, country music, horses and dogs. He loved to be where the action was, whether it was a hunting trip, a church dinner, a work project in the neighborhood, his regular Wednesday trips to the mall or a gathering of family or friends. Gerald was a generous and loving person who lived his life with great spirit despite adversity. He will be missed by many. He is survived by his brothers Art (Eileen), Roland (Esther) and Father Jim, sisters Pat (Louie) David, Lorraine (Paul) Corcoran, Barb (Ted) Thibault, his uncle Bernie McQuade, several nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends. In addition to his parents, Gerald was pre-deceased by an infant brother, his sister Juanita McAuliffe, brother-in-law Dave McAuliffe and nephews Michael McAuliffe and Robert David.
Visitation will take place at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John on Saturday and Sunday March 2nd and 3rd from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joachim’s Church, 603 Loch Lomond Road on Monday, March 4th at 11 am. Interment will follow immediately at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the Palliative Care Unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital or Bobby’s Hospice would be appreciated by the family.
