It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Joan Alice MacNeil, 85, of Brook Street, North Sydney, on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Surrey, England she was a daughter of the late Jack and Clara (Punter) Trussler.
Joan, having been a war bride arrived in Canada at Pier 21 on board the Queen Mary, after the Second World War. She was an active member of the War Brides Association and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #19. She was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.
Joan enjoyed spending time with her family and doing her many hobbies which included knitting, gardening, and watching her favourite TV show Coronation Street.
Joan is survived by her beloved husband, Daniel MacNeil; her daughter, Janice (Terry) Piercey; her son, Darren (Debbie) MacNeil; one very special grandson, Darren (Lindsay) Piercey and two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Luke, whom she loved dearly. Also surviving is her sister, Sheila and family of Somerset, England, and sister-in-law, Donna Trussler of East Lawrencetown, N.S.; as well as several nieces and nephews; her very special friend, Gladys Gillis and her faithful companion, ‘Smasher’.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her brother, John Trussler and several sisters and brothers-in-law.
The family would like to thank Dr. Doug Kohlsmith and the nursing staff of 4 East and the 5th Floor of the Northside General Hospital for their kindness and compassion given to Joan.
As per Joan’s request there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at a later date. Donations in Joan’s memory may be made to the Veterans Comfort Fund.
Arrangements have been entrusted to W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.
