It is with sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of our father, John Francis Roland MacKenzie. He passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, Francis was the son of the late William and Jeanette (MacDonald) MacKenzie.
A well-known piper in the Cape Breton area, Francis was a 46 year member of the Cape Breton Highlanders Pipes and Drums Band and the Cape Breton Highlanders Pipe Band where he piped at the Official Opening of the Canso Causeway in 1955. He was also a member of the North Nova Scotia Highlanders 2nd Battalion (Cape Breton) and Pipe Major and principal instructor with the Cape Breton Highland Society Pipes and Drums Band in Sydney. Proud of his Scottish heritage, Francis piped at countless events including memorial services, funerals, political rallies and weddings. Francis was a 30 year member of the Sydney Knights of Columbus, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 12, Dorchester St. and an active member for many years with the Cape Breton Gaelic Society. Francis owned and operated a glass business in Sydney for many years.
He is survived by his children, Donald (Diane), Lower Sackville; Patricia (Robert) Gardiner; Janice Huestis, both of Sydney; Douglas (Susan), Tantallon; Brian (Susan); Maureen (Patrick) Sutherland; Sandra (Peter) Trask; Shauna (Steve) Nearing, all of Sydney; grandchildren, Paul, Kathleen, Trevor, Brittany and Lindsay MacKenzie, Cynthia (Gardiner) Whitton, Roberta and Alexandra Gardiner, Lisa (Huestis) Wilson and Craig Huestis, Julia MacKenzie, Peter Sutherland, Jenny (Sutherland) MacDougall, Justine, Hilary and Courtney Trask, Ryan and Adam Nearing; great-grandchildren, Siara, Raven, Maggie, Liam, Keith and Reece; siblings, Kevin, Halifax; Bernice (Anslem) MacDonald, New Glasgow; Aline MacKenzie, Sydney and also by several nieces and nephews.
Francis was predeceased by his dedicated wife of 55 years, the former Margaret Catherine 'M.C.' (MacIsaac); sister-in-law, Florence Doucet and brother-in-law, Alex-Dan MacIsaac.

Visitation for Mr. MacKenzie will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Sunday, March 17 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church with Rev. Duaine Devereaux officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
