Entered into eternal peace on March 25, 2013 Gertrude Joanna Carew (née Poole) born July 31, 1930. Treasured by her loving husband of 56 years, Thomas Joseph Carew and her two devoted daughters: Patricia Poole and Karen (Fung- Kee-Fung). Blessed by the loving admiration of her 4 grandchildren: Amy Ash-Haley (Kevin), Kristian Ash (Lisa Kavanagh), Konner and Mallory Fung-Kee-Fung, son-in-law, Michael Fung-Kee-Fung; and two adored great-grandchildren: Keely and Rory Haley. She joins into eternal rest with her loving parents: Charles and Mary Maud Poole and 6 brothers and sisters. A native of Colliers, Conception Bay, she was a pioneer in women’s employment and a champion of women’s place in the workforce, through her work at the Federal Government. She was a trailblazer, promoting the role of women in the workforce long before it was fashionable to do so. A fierce defender of her children and grandchildren she strove to instill in each of them a sense of contribution, kindness and generosity. She contributed to the welfare of others in many ways, notably through her volunteer work. She will be lovingly remembered by her extended family and a large circle of friends. Funeral Mass to be held at Corpus Christi Parish, Waterford Bridge Road at 9:30 a.m. Monday, April 1. By her request cremation has taken place and flowers are gratefully declined. Private burial will take place at a later date. The family will be in residence at her home following the service to receive condolences in lieu of visitation. Bold in life, courageous in death, we beseech you, Oh Lord, to grant her peace and serenity and enter into your eternal glory.
