Jean Dickie

Born In: Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada

Passed on: April 6th, 2013

Jean Helen (Price) Dickie, of Melmerby Beach, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at age 77 in the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia, of complications related to Wegener’s Disease.
Jean was born on April 18, 1935 in Sussex, New Brunswick to the late Greta (Whelpley) Price and the late Francis Price.
Jean lived all her school life in Sussex. Upon graduation she attended Teachers College in Fredericton, New Brunswick and went on to teach school in Saint John, New Brunswick where she met and married Joseph Fellows Dickie (RCMP). They spent 52 wonderful years together. The first 18 of those years were in Newfoundland, 11 of which were in isolated outports. They were transferred to Sydney, Nova Scotia and in 1976 came to New Glasgow where Jean and Joe both spent the rest of their lives.
While in New Glasgow Jean sold real estate for Central Trust. She loved meeting people and took great pride and satisfaction when she could match a family with a home in the New Glasgow area.
Upon retiring Jean and Joe spent 29 wonderful years wintering in Apollo Beach, Florida, where they met a host of close friends, and considered it their second home.
Jean was very much involved in her community activities both in New Glasgow and Florida including the Y’s Menettes, the Little Harbour Fire Ladies Auxillary and her Florida Park Association. She took great pleasure in being an active member of the Baptist church in the many places she lived throughout her life.
Jean was predeceased by her husband Joe in 2010 and by her parents, Greta and Fran Price, and brothers-in-law, Ronald Gentle and John Simpson.
Jeans whole life centered around her three wonderful children, son Gregory (Glenda) Dickie, St. John’s, Newfoundland; daughters, Pamela (Allan) Power, New Glasgow, Nova Scotia; Gillian Dickie, Toronto, Ontario.
Jean was so very proud of her children and equally proud of her four very special grandchildren: Charlotte and Alexander Dickie, St. John’s; Kyle and Kara Power, New Glasgow.
Jean never missed any opportunity to tell you about the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. They were always in her thoughts and visits from them were the highlights of her life.
Jean is also survived by one brother, William (Elizabeth) Price, Simcoe, Ontario; twin sister Joan Gentle, London, Ontario; brother-in-law, William (Denise) Dickie, Cornwall, Ontario; two sisters-in-law, Sally (Jim) Haverstock, Kentville, Nova Scotia; Nancy Simpson, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Jean’s children were constant sources of support during her life, and when the time came they did all they could to ease her through her illness. The love she so freely gave, without judgement or qualification, was returned many times over.
Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to the Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. The family will receive visitors from 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church, 895 East River Road on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 11 a.m. with a reception to immediately follow at the church.
Burial of ashes will take place at 2 p.m. in the Church Brook Cemetery, Little Harbour.
Jean had wonderful friends and neighbours both at Melmerby Beach and in Florida.
She and her family would like to thank them for their visits and support during her illness; it was so very much appreciated.
