CARNRIKE: Ralph Baden Carnrike passed away at Cypress Regional Hospital on Wednesday, May 1st., at the age of 98. He was born on August 8, 1914, the son of George and Margaret Carnrike. Ralph was predeceased by his wife, Ruth, on June 18th, 2010, his parents and his siblings, Ted, Aileen and Viola. He is survived by his niece, Lorraine [Lawrence] Hendrickson; his nephew, George [Winnie] Carnrike; and great nieces and nephews. Ralph attended Waldeck Public School, and completed high school in Swift Current, graduating in 1932. He later attended the Moose Jaw Normal School, obtaining his teaching certificate and years later he attended the University of Saskatchewan to obtain his Bachelor of Education. Ralph began his teaching career on August 1st, 1935 at Spenst School, north of Waldeck. A career which would span over 42 years, at various schools and culminating at Central School here in Swift Current. This career in Canada was interrupted by his service in the Canadian Army, stationed in England, from 1942 to 1945. It was on a 10 day leave from the army, shortly before V-E Day, that he met his wife, Ruth, in Leeds, and they were married the following year, on March 23, 1946. Even though the war was over, the soldiers had to wait another year to return to Canada, so Ralph made use of the time by teaching in a Canadian Trade School in Holland, and also taking university classes at a college near London. He returned to Canada in May,1946 and Ruth followed in September. Following his retirement in June of 1977, he and his wife, Ruth enjoyed swimming at The Landing, fishing at Duncairn, golfing at Elmwood, and in the winter jogging and playing badminton at the Recreation Centre. In August, 2012, due to failing health, Ralph became a resident, first at the Swift Current Care Centre and then at the Prairie Pioneers Lodge, where he received excellent care at both facilities. The Funeral for Ralph was held on May 6th at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Warren's Funeral Home with Rev. Ruth McArthur officiating, and interment at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Memorial Donations may be made to the Alzheimer Association of Saskatchewan or the charity of the donor's choice. Warren's Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
