ALFRED WHITTNEY WESTGATE

ALFRED WHITTNEY WESTGATE

Alfred Whittney Westgate
February 27, 1931 ~ April 27, 2013
Alfred Whittney Westgate was born on the farm outside of Lloydminster, Saskatchewan (North Bend) to Chase and Olive Westgate, February 27, 1931. He was one of ten siblings:  Dean, Alfred, Vernon, Lyle, Byron, Art, Des, Virginia, Marie and Jim. When Alfred was 16 he left home to work several farms, grain elevators and some house building in and around Lloydminster. When he was 19, he started working at the Red Rock Pulp & Paper Mill in Northern Ontario where he remained a faithful employee for 40 years.  After retirement, Alfred and his wife lived in Winfield, B.C. for 12 years, Kelowna for seven years and then moved to Gibsons, B.C. to be close to his daughter and son.  Alfred lived most of the last four years of his life in Christenson Village care facility due to Alzheimer’s and dementia.  He died Saturday, April 27, 2013 with his family at his bedside.
He leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Lenita Marceline Westgate (Abrahamson) of Gibsons, B.C., and their three children: Allan and his wife Marielle of Quebec, Karen and her husband Dale of Roberts Creek, and Wayne and his wife Julie of Gibsons, B.C.; six grandchildren: Catherine Westgate (Jean-Patrick) and Michelle Westgate (Jonathan) from Quebec, Dustin Koch (Jessica) from Winnipeg, Lonny Silta (Cassi) and Duane Silta (Neetan) from Roberts Creek, and Sean Silta (Meg) from Gibsons, B.C.; also five great-grandchildren: Jordan, Madison, Tavis, Kaiden and Emma; and many nieces, nephews and friends across Canada.
Alfred taught his family his love of fishing and hunting. They always had plenty of pickerel, moose and partridge for the dinner table. He invented a hand-held blueberry picker and picked more berries than anyone.  He created beautiful furniture, loved animals and was an enthusiastic gardener who whistled (and sometimes yodeled) while he worked.
Dad, you were not a man of many words, but we will remember you for your dedication to your family, your love of nature and your great sense of humour.  You will remain in our hearts forever.
We wish to express many thanks to the staff at Christenson Village for their thoughtful care and kind words.
