It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Cletus Stanley, on Saturday morning, May 11, 2013 at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, Cletus was the son of the late Norman and Kate (Chisholm) Stanley. He leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years, Mary (Steele); his four sons, of whom he was very proud: Keith (Arlene), Glace Bay, Derek (Sherry), Moncton, N.B., Todd (Wendy), Reserve Mines and Troy (Eva), Calgary, Alta.; his eight wonderful grandchildren, who he loved very much: Amanda, Krista, Breanna, Matthew, Kate, Chris, Michael, Madison and his recent great-granddaughter, Aleigha, as well as many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister, Emily (Leo) Landry, Ontario.
He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters: Anna, Marjorie, Toni, Madeline, Alice, Leo, Norman, Edgar, Herbie, Alex and Frank.
Cletus spent 41 years working in various coal mines in Cape Breton, including Broughton, No. 12, 1B, & 26 collieries, Prince Mine and Phalen Colliery, up until his retirement in 1992.
He was an avid hockey and baseball player for many years, participated in boxing, and was a keen bowler for many years, where he collected numerous trophies for his efforts. He spent many years volunteering as president of the St. John’s Parish Men’s Club, and was a passionate Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays fan, enjoyed playing card games and bingo and loved participating in lengthy discussions about politics and mining.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, with a reception to follow. Interment at St. John’s Cemetery.
The family wishes to offer sincere thanks to Dr. Soussou, the staff at the Glace Bay Hospital (3rd Floor), New Waterford Home Care, and the VON for the wonderful care provided to Cletus during his illness.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Cletus’ memory can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
