LAWRENCE (LARRY) WILLIAM GNYP

Larry Gnyp, 75, of Christopher Lake (formerly of Prince Albert), SK passed away on Monday, May 13, 2013, surrounded by his family at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon. Larry was born on December 22, 1937 and raised in Kamsack, SK. He received a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Saskatchewan and a Doctor of Optometry from the Toronto College of Optometry. Dr. Gnyp practised optometry in Prince Albert from 1967 until 2002. On May 8, 2013, he celebrated his 53rd wedding anniversary with his wife Zoria (nee Rudachyk). A prairie boy, Larry felt most at home in the country, whether on his parents’ farm in the Kamsack District or at his acreage near Christopher Lake. He loved all aspects of nature - fishing in northern Saskatchewan, listening to the phoebe singing in his yard, or nurturing his tomato plants from seeds to giant bushes. Larry was proudly self-sufficient and worked hard in all aspects of his life. In business, he believed in providing time, attention and a quality product to his patients. He never paid someone else to do something he could do himself. He heated his home with wood harvested and split by his own hands. He grew his own vegetables, hunted, and gathered mushrooms and berries so that his refrigerator, pantry and root cellar were always full. Larry was genuinely interested in people and always took time to learn about their lives and interests. He was truly a lifelong learner, enjoyed experiencing different cultures in other countries, and was especially interested in how history impacts the present. He spent many winters in Mexico, where he loved the simplicity of life, the fresh food, and the warmth and generosity of people. He also enjoyed being at his Nesslin Lake cabin, where he read, played cribbage and taught his grandsons to fish. Larry was predeceased by his father William and his daughter Allyson (in infancy). Larry is survived by his wife Zoria; son Bradley (Olena Kovpak) of Saskatoon; daughter Melanie (Alan Montain) of Calgary; daughter Colleen (Malcolm Tinsley) of Calgary; his mother Ina of Kamsack; brother Richard (Barbara); brother Ken (Jennifer); grandsons Kyrilo and Marco Gnyp, Joshua, Lucas and Daniel Montain and Matthew Tinsley; and various uncles, aunts and cousins. In lieu of flowers, in memoriam gifts may be made to Nature Conservancy of Canada (www.natureconservancy.ca). Family and friends are invited to gather at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 16 at River Park Memorial Chapel, Prince Albert for visitation and a time of remembrance. Funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 17 at Hillcrest Funeral Home in Saskatoon (east on 8th Street, first right past Briargate Rd). Reverend Father Pau Ruiz-Gomar of the Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church will officiate. Interment will take place at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Saskatoon. Family and friends may view the obituary and sign the guest book at www.riverparkfuneral.ca. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of RIVER PARK MEMORIAL CHAPEL, Prince Albert, 306-764-2727, Donald M. Moriarty, Funeral Director
