Mary Margaret MacDonald, 82, of Sydney, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 15, 2013, in the An Cala unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a brief illness.
Born in Dartmouth, she was the eldest daughter of the late John Henry and Margaret (O’Hearn) McNeil of Dartmouth and Irish Cove, Cape Breton.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Gregory MacDonald and her sister, Theresa Harroun.
She is survived by her seven children, Peggy, Sydney, Catherine (Peter Green), Blacketts Lake, Susan (Brian Martin), Sydney, Connie, Sydney, Frances, Dartmouth, Neil (and his wife Cathy), Sydney, and Flora, Sydney; five beloved grandsons, Graham (Rebecca) and Jonathan Green, Brian Maxwell Martin and Greg and Jack MacDonald and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are her sisters, Agnes (Mrs. Ernie Keeler), Dartmouth, and Mrs. Catherine Scott, Fredericton, N.B.
Mary will be remembered by many as the long-time organist for the St. Theresa’s parish CWL funeral choir and as a caterer, along with her late friend, Martha Glancey, at St. Theresa’s Parish Centre. She was a past president of the St. Theresa’s CWL and last month received her 40-year membership pin.
Visitation for Mary MacDonald will be at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Friday, May 17 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Theresa’s Church, Whitney Avenue, Sydney, Saturday at 2:30 p.m., Rev. Jim Oliver officiating with burial to follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made in Mary’s name to the An Cala Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
