Melvin Hayward Smith of Bellevue Beach, NL, well known businessman and trucker passed peacefully away May 16, 2013 after an extended illness. Taken from us far too soon. Husband to devoted wife Carol (nee Whitten), beloved father to Wanda Smith (Roger Roberts), Kelly McCarthy (Duane McCarthy) and Stephen Smith (Julie Abbott), dear grandfather to Patricia Smith (Gerard Dwyer), Charlene McCarthy (Mitchell Hickey), Kaylee Making, Taylor Abbott, Cole Smith, Scott and Kristen Roberts. Beloved “Canadian Dad” to our Russian friends Sergei, Natalia and Sasha Morozov. Business partner, brother and friend to his remaining sibling Everett Smith (Betty) St. Phillip's. Brother in-law to Larry Sutherland (Ontario) June Holden (Mt. Pearl), Alma Lowe (St. John's) and Peggy Parsons (Torbay). Predeceased by parents Jacob and Nina Smith (Warren), brother Donald Smith and sister Marguerite Sutherland, Father and Mother in-law Augustus and Evelyn Whitten (Gollop) Bellevue Beach and brothers in-law James Holden, Graham Lowe and Robert Parsons. Cherished uncle to numerous nephews, nieces and great nephews and nieces who were blessed to have shared his life. "Muff" loved you all deeply. Melvin will be sadly missed by close buddies John and Evelyn Hillyard (Clarenville), Levi Smith (Toronto), Wade French and Ann Reid (Mt. Pearl), Terry Reid “Jinx” (Norman’s Cove) Cecil Anderson (Bishop's Falls), Frank Haynes (Lewisporte), Art and Winnie Smith (Sylvan Lake), Joe and Rose Shambri (Montreal), George and Meta Hollett (Chance Cove), Kevin and Sheila Fahey (Bellevue Beach) Vince Jones (Torbay) Dave and Mavis Butler (Thornlea) as well as many other deeply appreciated friends and acquaintances who were touched by Melvin's generous friendship. Much gratitude is extended to the exceptional staff 5 East and ICU St. Clare's Mercy Hospital; Dr. David Harrington and his medical associates; as well as Dr. Reginald Ragnauth GP for all their medical intervention and care. Kind appreciation to Reverend Jean Smith and head nurse of 5 East Maureen March who supported our family through such difficult times over the past 5 months. Melvin will forever be deeply missed and fondly loved by those who knew him well. Remains have been cremated and a Service scheduled for Saturday, May 25th 4PM at the Church of The Ascension, Chance Cove. Upon Melvin's request a joyful celebration of life will follow at the Chance Cove Lion's Club for friends and family to gather.
