Doris Annie Sanford, age 87, of Windsor, formerly of Centre Burlington, Hants County, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2013, in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor, surrounded by her large and loving family. Born on March 15, 1926, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Yule) Davies. Doris was employed at Clayton’s Clothing, Halifax, during the war movement. She had also worked at the C.N.R. where she operated the round table. In 1946, she moved to Centre Burlington, where she was Postmistress for many years and upon retirement she went to work at the cannery at Avon Foods, Port Williams and then in housekeeping at Payzant Memorial Hospital, and later at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, until she finally retired in 1994, at the age of 68. Doris is survived by her daughters, Dorothy (Earl) Haley, Sackville; Margaret Gonsalves, Windsor; Faye Barkhouse (Jack Langley), Liverpool; her grandchildren, Charlotte (Bobby) Poole, Sackville; Fred (Annette) Lee, Sackville; Elizabeth Lee, Mount Uniacke; Durlin (Scott) Higgins, Sackville; Tracey Hollett, Sackville; Lorne (Charlotte) Haley, Gaspereau; Tamara Craig) Higgins, Sackville; Shawn (Tracey) Young, Three Mile Plains; Glenn Young, Windsor; Jason Young, Bedford; and Laural (Mike) Barkhouse-Evans, Duncan, British Columbia; 18 great grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren; brother, Thomas (Vicki) Davies, Barrie, Ontario; sister-in-law, Joyce Sanford, Windsor; she is also survived by her extended family in Ontario. Besides her parents, Thomas and Elizabeth (Yule) Davies; Doris was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Stanley Frederick Sanford (1996); grandsons, Terrance Haley and Gregory Barkhouse; great granddaughter, Cynthia Poole; son-in-law, Dr. Jerry Gonsalves; sisters, Jean Munro and Margaret Gould; brother, William “Billy” Davies; brother-in-law, Ellsworth Sanford; also by her former son-in-law, Fred Young, whom she thought of as a son. The family wishes to thank the staff of Dykeland Lodge, Dr. Viji Nathan and Dr. Cathryn Smith, for the excellent care given to Doris. Visitation was 7-9 p.m. Thursday, May 23, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor (902-798-2232). Funeral service was 2 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Bill Gibson officiated, followed by a reception at the Three Mile Plains Community Hall. A private family interment was held in the Card Beach Cemetery, Centre Burlington, Hants County. Family flowers only.
