MAILLET, Rev. Leo Joseph Eustace – 85, Villa St-Joseph-du-Lac, Dayton, Yarmouth Co., passed away on Friday, May 24, 2013 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born March 29, 1928 in Mavillette, Digby Co., he was a son of the late Vincent and Lucie (Comeau) Maillet. After finishing his studies at Collège Ste-Anne in Church Point, Father Maillet entered Holy Heart Seminary in Halifax, and was the first priest to be ordained in and for the newly formed Diocese of Yarmouth on May 5, 1954 at Saint Alphonse, Digby Co. Father Maillet went on to serve in the following parishes: St. Ambrose Cathedral Parish (1954-1957, 1960-1963), St. Joseph’s Parish, Kentville (1957-1959), St. Patrick’s Parish, Digby (1959-1960, 1970-1982), St. Gabriel’s Parish, Comeau’s Hill (1963-1966), St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Wolfville (1966-1970) and St. Michael’s Parish, Wedgeport (1982-1990). After taking a sabbatical in 1991, he continued his parish ministry at Immaculate Conception Parish, East Pubnico (1992) and at St. Bernard Parish, St. Bernard (1993-1994). At this point, Father Maillet became the Catholic chaplain at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, as well as for many of the local nursing homes until 2010). He was a very proud Acadian and was an avid genealogist. He is survived by brothers, Gerald (Yvette) Maillet, Mavillette; Nicholas (Florence) Maillet, Richfield; Catherine (Rick) Neilsen and Cecelia (Gerry) Burton, both of Dartmouth, a brother-in-law, Paul, a sister-in-law, Yvonne, as well as many nieces and nephews. Aside from his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, André Maillet and sisters, Marguerite Maillet (Sister Marie, FMA) and Annette Deveau. Visitation took place from 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday with prayers at 8 p.m., both at Saint Ambrose Cathedral, 43 Albert St., Yarmouth, where the funeral mass was held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 27, Msgr. Gerald LeBlanc, V.G., officiating, assisted by his brother priests. A reception followed in the Jubilee Room (downstairs at St. Ambrose Cathedral), after which interment took place in St. Alphonse Parish Cemetery, Saint Alphonse. It was requested that there be family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Development and Peace or to the Yarmouth Food Bank. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to H. M.
