MILLER- Hazel Dorothy Maria (Nee: Horne) of Lethbridge, Alberta passed away comfortably and peacefully on May 26, 2013 at St. Michael's Health Centre in Lethbridge. She was born in Regina SK on May 21, 1923. Hazel is survived by her four sons, Dennis (Vicky), Allen, Lyndon (Kasia), Clinton (Laurie); four grandchildren Robert (Litisha), Janelle, Madison, and Bronson; and one great grandchild Chase. She was predeceased by her husband Robert John Miller, father Leigh Harcourt Horne, mother Fanny Ann Crumley; three siblings including brother Albert and sisters Margaret and Florence. Hazel grew up on the farm in Dilke, Saskatchewan, 40 miles north of Moose Jaw. Her schooling was at the Renoke School and included many hours of home studying during her high school years. Being very much a people person and having a need to help others, she took nursing training at Regina General from 1946 -1949. Through the recommendation of a patient, she was made aware of jobs at the Herbert-Morse Union Hospital. She moved to Herbert Saskatchewan in October 1949 with her good friend Bessie Dickson (Jeffrey) to start her nursing career. There she met her husband, Robert John Miller (1925-1974) and they were married in Montreal in 1952. Over the years Hazel was the Director of Nurses in Herbert and raised her four sons. She was widowed in 1974 after the tragic death of her husband Bob. She retired from nursing after 33 years as D.O.N. in 1987. After spending a few retirement years in Herbert, she subsequently moved to Lethbridge, Alberta to be close to the grandchildren in 1995. During her retirement she spent many fulfilling years travelling the world. Hazel, a very special lady, was known as a joyful livewire, a high-energy individual with a real zest for life. Highly dedicated to family and work life, she considered her most significant accomplishments were meeting her husband, raising four boys and contributing to the community through nursing at the local hospital. She loved and was very much loved by family, many friends, co-workers and patients. She will be sadly missed, loved and remembered. The family thanks the doctors and nurses at St Michael's Health Centre, Lethbridge, for the special care and attention provided to her during her final days before rest.
