David Gass
The family of David Alexander Gass sadly announces his passing on June 2, 2013 at Providence Place, Moose Jaw, SK. The youngest son of Dr. Charles L. Gass and Jean Emmeline (MacGregor), he was born in Amherst, NS on February 12, 1922. He spent his childhood in Sackville, NB and later attended Bishop’s Boys’ School in Lennoxville, PQ with his brother. Returning to Sackville in his teens, he attended the Men’s Academy and Mount Allison University. Before graduating, he enlisted in the Army as WWII was underway and spent the next 4-5 years in the tank corps, the 8th New Brunswick Hussars (Princess Louise’s) Armoured Regiment of Sussex, NB, serving in the UK, Italy, North Africa and Holland. He attained the rank of Captain and endured many life altering experiences. Soon after his discharge from service at the end of the War, he and the love of his life, Jean Wilcox, who he had wooed at Mount Allison, were wed in Montreal, PQ. Soon after he began his medical training at Dalhousie Medical School in Halifax, NS. Upon graduation they moved to River Hebert, NS for his first year as a family physician. The following year (1953) they came to Moose Jaw where he joined the Moose Jaw Clinic, later becoming a partner and they raised their family. He was a dedicated family doctor, committed to many generations of families during his over 50 years of practice. He distinguished himself as a medical professional on numerous boards and committees at the local, provincial and national levels. Actively involved in the College of Family Physicians of Canada, he became the first president of the Sask. Chapter and over the years he was awarded honourary certificate and fellowship degrees. He was a strong advocate for the development of Home Care programs and worked on planning committees to establish Providence Place where as a senior himself, he continued to work with the elderly at the end of his career. He became a Rotarian after his retirement and enjoyed the camaraderie and company of those members. He had a lifelong love of music, especially jazz and a passion for cars which even in his youth he showed when he bought and restored several Model T’s. Holiday travel enriched his life and trips to the coasts of NS and BC, and also Maui remained favourites. A humble and self-less man, a man of conviction, a man with moral strength, a true gentleman and also a gentle and kind man who appreciated the same in others. He enjoyed his family and friends and people in general and will be remembered fondly by many whose lives he touched. Predeceased by siblings, Florence, George and infant James, and his wife of over 66 years, Jean (his “gal”), he leaves his children, Sue (Ewart) Morse, Jim (Deborah) Gass, and Stephanie (Jeff) Crichton; his grandchildren, Christopher (Jennifer Knickle) Morse , Sarah (Robert) Gordon, and Rachel Morse (Mark) Arbing; Lisa (Deborah) Smart and Richelle (Brock) Marr; Blake (Brittany) Tremblay, Jordan Tremblay, and Brodie Crichton; great-grandchildren, Max Morse; Emily, Maggie and Keira Gordon; Zoe Arbing and Bryce Tremblay; also nephews, David and Charles Gass, niece, Anne Wadleigh and their families. The family wishes to recognize and thank the caring and kind staff of Providence Place where he spent his final 1 ½ years enjoying the company of those he worked with for so long. Also thanks to Dr. Brian Sanderson for his professional attention and friendship. The Funeral Service will be held at Minto United Church, 1036 7th Ave. N.W., on Friday June 7, 2013 at 11:00 am.
