POWELL, FRANK J. - (March 28, 1942 - June 12, 2013) - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Frank J. Powell QC, in the Community Health Unit of the QE 11 Health Sciences Center on June 12, 2013, after a courageous 5-year struggle with a rare neurological disease, surrounded by his friends and his partner of 38 years, Dr. Robert McLean. Born on March 28, 1942 in Montreal, he attended Chambly County High School graduating in 1961. He left Quebec to attend Mount Allison University graduating in 1965 with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree. He decided to take a break from his studies for one year and work with the CNR. In 1966 he began studying law at Dalhousie University graduating with his LLB in 1969. He was hired by Leonard Kitz and joined the firm of Kitz Matheson Brown and became a partner in 1971. He practiced law for 31 years with this firm and all of its subsequent mergers with various other law firms. He retired in 2006 from McInnis Cooper. He was honorary solicitor for the Canadian Cancer Society for 15 years and served on various other boards and committees. He was appointed to the Queens’ Council in 1985 by the Honorable Alan R. Abraham. He is survived by his partner Robert McLean, his sister in law Susan McBride, his bother George (Ginger) Powell, niece Kerri Powell, nephews Matthew and Andrew Powell all of Montreal, and godson Nathan Campbell of Toronto. He was predeceased by his mother Frances M. Powell and his father George T. Powell. We very much wish to thank the staff of Parkland Clayton Park Bradford Hall for their loving care and compassion during his lengthy illness.
Visitation will be on Sunday, June 16th from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm in J. A. Snow Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held on Monday June 17th, 2013 in St. Andrews United Church, 6036 Coburg Rd at 11 am. Burial at Fairview Lawn Cemetery. Reception at the Bicycle Thief, Bishops Landing. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive.
