It is with sadness, that we announce the passing of Walter 'Mac' Mc Aleer, 86, on Monday, July 1st, 2013 at the Glace Bay Hospital. He resided at Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay for a short period. Walter was a former resident of Hinchey Avenue, New Waterford and River Ryan.
Born in New Brunswick, he was the son of the late Rubben and Pearl (Ricker) Mac Aleer.
Walter was a retired farmer, lumber jack and soldier. He enjoyed looking after his livestock. He was also a mechanic and maintenance person at the Radar Base.
When he stayed at Grezel's Campground, River Ryan, he was known as 'The Mayor’. Mac loved music, especially Wilf Carter and playing his guitar. He was also a veteran of World War 2 and the Korean War and a member of the Ashby Legion, Branch 138. Walter was a member of the Army Navy Air Force, Unit 217 in New Waterford.
Walter was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by his good friend's, George Syms, Paul Grezel Sr. & his family and Junior Candaloria, along with all his buddies from Lingan Road.
Visitation will be held 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., Wednesday at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Walter will be taken to church at noon on Thursday followed by a service at 2 p.m. in Calvin United Church, New Waterford with Rev. Duncan E. Roach officiating.
Burial in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown. Following the burial, a reception will take place at the Army Navy Air Force Unit 217, Wilson Avenue, New Waterford.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Walter's memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart & Stroke Fund.
