It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Agnes Sullivan, 87, on July 8, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Howard and Margaret (Cathcart) Sullivan.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
A lifelong resident of New Waterford, Agnes received her early education at St. Agnes School and St. Joseph’s Convent School in Mabou. She later graduated from the Nova Scotia Teachers’ College and began her teaching career in Alberta. She returned to New Waterford where she was a well-known math teacher at St. Agnes School and Breton Education Centre for over 35 years, retiring in 1984. A basketball player in her youth, she conveyed her love of the game to new generations as a coach. Her dedication to the teaching profession along with her passion for mathematics endeared her to countless students who to this day credit her for their aptitude in math. She continued to tutor math in her retirement.
Agnes was engaged in her community. She was the founding president of St. Agnes Parish CWL in 1965, and remained an active member. She was involved with the Nova Scotia Teachers’ Union, the Retired Teachers’ Association and served on the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women. In her retirement, she developed a passion for bridge and made many new friends attending several games weekly. A woman of strong faith, generosity and courage, she was known for her wise counsel and quick wit.
Agnes was predeceased by her brothers, Michael, Howard, Gerald and Daniel, and sisters, Lucy-Eileen, Johanna Tompkins and Frances D’Intino.
She was a thoughtful and loving aunt to many nieces and nephews and their families.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Jean Sullivan, of Sharon, Mass. A friend to many, she will be sadly missed and forever remembered.
