Joan Marshall
MARSHALL, JOAN (née RETALLACK) - 1943 - 2013 - MA (U of T), PhD (McGill) - Of Hudson, Quebec, Joan died in her home with her children and friends by her side on July 15th. Throughout her life, Joan gave selflessly to her family and community. She was an accomplished author and professor at McGill University and a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. Her decade-long research on Grand Manan was seminal in her academic life. Predeceased by Hugh, her loving husband of 37 years, Joan will be carried in the hearts of her children, David (Ildi) and Stephanie (Justin); her grandchildren, Ursula, Lauren, Matthew, and Julia; and her sisters, Nancy (Michel) and Christine (John). Besides her family, her close friendships were of great importance to her. With all of these people she was able to share her love of canoeing, hiking, literature, and music. She was forever fascinated with the natural world. She had an indomitable spirit of hope and joy which inspired us all, and for which she will always be remembered.
A funeral service, followed by reception, will be held on Friday, July 26th, at 1:00pm at St. James Church in Hudson, Qc. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to NOVA Hudson or to the RCGS www.rcgs.org/donate.
