Kimiyo Yada

Mrs. Kimiyo Yada (nee Hirano) passed away peacefully at home in Lillooet, July 19th, 2013, in her 97th year. Predeceased by husband Goro in 1990, daughter Joyce (Dennis) in 2002, son Glenn in 2006 & daughter Margaret (Clyde) in 2008. Also predeceased by all her siblings, Tammy, George & Gus. Survived by estranged daughter Joan (Malcolm), grandchildren Gregg (Ursula) & Josh Pettit, Carolyn (Mark) Dumont, Paula (John) Hitsman & Clayton Ryan, 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Yada came to the Bridge River Valley with members of the Yada & Hirano families during the evacuation of Japanese Canadians from the coast in 1942. Goro worked in the general store in Shalalth and during this time they made many life long friends. Eventually they moved to Lillooet and bought the Artie Phair store, later to be known as YADA’S.
Always a great business lady, she, and husband Goro, flourished in the grocery and dry goods business and raised their 4 children. Again they took a very active role in the community and helped out when the need arose.
During these busy years they experienced fires in 1948 & 1978 and in each case lost most of the family possessions, as their buildings were destroyed.
Never ones to complain, the Yada’s, with the help of the community of Lillooet, overcame the hardships and continued to be successful, hard working business people. In the later years, Yada’s was taken over by daughter Margaret and son in law Clyde Pettit.
Ashcroft Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
A truly remarkable woman has passed.
