John Fairfull-Smith

FAIRFULL-SMITH, DR. JOHN - The death of Dr. John Fairfull-Smith occurred at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on Wednesday, July 31, 2013. Born in Cochabamba, Bolivia, he was the son of the late John and Petronella (Zelaya) Fairfull-Smith and the husband of the late Erna (Melsheimer) Fairfull-Smith. John graduated in Medicine from Glasgow University, Scotland and then joined the British Army and was posted to Kenya for the rest of WWII. He returned to East Africa to work in Uganda for 14 years. He then worked back in Scotland during which time his children all completed their education. In 1974, he and Erna moved to Minto where he worked as family doctor to the community for nearly 20 years, retiring to live in Fredericton. Survived by his children, Dr. Robin Fairfull-Smith (Patricia) of Ottawa, ON, Janet Hewson (Malcolm) of Winchester, England and Dr. Hugh Fairfull-Smith (Catherine) of Lismore, New South Wales, Australia; three grandchildren, Daniel, Alan and Deborah; as well as many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Erna, his son, Neil; one sister, Edith; and two brothers, George and Edward. The family is very grateful for all the kindness and friendship shown by all of John and Erna's friends in New Brunswick during their later years. The family would also like to thank the staff of Windsor Court for the excellent and very personal care John received while he was a resident there.
There will be no visitation by family request. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Minto, NB, on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at 11:00 am, with Father Paul Bebodu as celebrant. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to Camp Wegesegum. Online condolences may be made at www.mcadamsfh.com
