SMART, MARY ETHEL - Mary Smart, 92, of Etobicoke, ON, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2013 in Pierrefonds, Quebec, while visiting her granddaughter's family. In attendance were her daughter and son, who were accompanying her on her third consecutive annual visit to family in Saint John. Ethel was born on January 12, 1921 in Saint John to Sylvester and Ella Maud Arrowsmith. She was predeceased by her husband, Wes, in 1971; her parents; five brothers: Bill, Joe, Carl, Ernie and Gerald; four sisters: Lila, Blanche, Hazel and Eleanor; and two sister-in-laws: Evelyn and Letty. Ethel is survived by daughter, Lynda Baynton (Bill) of Bradford; and son, Robert of Etobicoke; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Helen Callahan (Cal) of Saint John; several nieces, nephews and friends. She was a loving mother and grandmother who devoted her life to her family and friends. She was especially proud of her great-grandchildren, Logan, Madeleine and Chloé. Ethel spent countless hours knitting and crocheting and particularly loved making sweaters for her great-grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to Saint Mary's Band in Saint John, New Brunswick, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the Kidney Foundation of Canada. The family is grateful for the support of the staff at Brampton Civic Hospital's Dialysis Centre since early last year. Arrangements entrusted to the Rideau Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.
