BARTON, EVERETT - The death of Everett Wallace Barton occurred at the Oromocto Public Hospital on August 15. Born in Waterborough, New Brunswick on September 14, 1919, he was the son of the late Theodore and Lucy (Beake) Barton and husband to the love of his life, Louise. He is survived by his two daughters, Sandra Gates (Garnet), Lincoln, NB and Deborah Barton, Toronto, ON; one granddaughter, Stacey Gates (Dan Pratt), Waasis, NB; two great-grandchildren, Kira and Tyler; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Barton (Ferris), Waterborough and Ferne Jeffrey (Lewis), Moncton, NB; and several nieces and nephews. Everett was the last surviving member of his family. He was predeceased by his parents, Theodore and Lucy Barton; his wife, Louise; brothers, John, Bruce and Murray; and sisters, Gladys, Marjorie and Marion. Everett joined the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in April 1941 and completed his basic training in Fredericton, followed by his trades training in Camp Borden, Ontario. He was posted oversees in October 1941 where he served in England and Holland and returned home in February 1946. After returning from the War, he met and married Louise in 1947. After the War, he worked at Kitchen Brothers in Fredericton from 1946 to 1955, Army Headquarters in Fredericton from 1955 to 1956 and Construction Engineers in Camp Gagetown from 1956 until his retirement in September 1984. Everett joined the Canadian Order of Foresters in Waterborough in 1938, and then joined the Fredericton Lodge in 1946 where he sold insurance part-time. He served for three terms on the Foresters Executive Committee and four years as Vice-President, culminating with his election as High Chief Ranger in 1988. He moved to Brantford, Ontario in 1988 and back to Lincoln in 1990. He was the driving force behind the construction of the Canadian Foresters Manor in Oromocto and its management since its inception in 1982. The last number of years he held the positions of President and Chairman of the Manor's Executive Board. These positions he held until January, 2013. Everett owned and trained racehorses and could be seen at the racetrack in Fredericton for many years in the '70s and '80s. He was a devout family man who believed in family togetherness and support. He was always the first to assist other family members in their time of need and could always be counted on to get the job done or find the solution to any perceived crisis. He loved gardening, bowling, camping and in later years, curling, which he played until 2006. Everett was an active member of St. John's Anglican Church in Oromocto where he served on the vestry for 15 years and for two terms as warden. He held the position of Lower Lincoln Secretary to the school board when the Lower Lincoln School was being constructed. He canvassed for cancer research over 40 years and was the coordinator for Queens and Sunbury Counties for 10 years. He also spent many years canvassing and coordinating for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Oromocto Branch 93.
Visitation will be from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 pm and a Legion Tribute will be held at 7:00 pm on August 18 at the family residence, 2267 Route 102 Hwy, Lincoln, New Brunswick. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on August 19 at St. John's Anglican Church in Oromocto, with interment immediately following in St. John's Anglican Church Cemetery with Canon Walter Williams officiating. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Bishop's Funeral Home in Fredericton. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, St. John's Anglican Church, 60 Broad Rd, Oromocto or to a charity of the donor's choice.
