BARTER, Ruby-68, of Dartmouth passed away August 30, 2013 at home with her family by her side. Born in Bay de Verde, NL she was a daughter of the late William and Augusta (Blunden) Barter. Ruby’s career began with three years in the Royal Canadian Navy, but she later followed her mother’s footsteps with a long and rewarding career as a Registered Nurse. Following her graduation from Hammersmith Hospital in London, England she returned to Canada and worked as a staff nurse, until becoming the head nurse at the Dartmouth General Emergency Department. She went on to become the director of Nursing at the Highland View Hospital in Amherst, NS and Colchester Regional Hospital in Truro. A lifelong learner, Ruby later earned her master’s degree in Health Services Administration from Dalhousie University and subsequently worked as a health care consultant in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick until her retirement. She loved good food and was an accomplished and adventurous cook. She enjoyed preparing wonderful meals for her family and friends at her home in Dartmouth and the cottage in Chester, where she and her husband George shared many happy times. She was always happy to provide nourishing, delicious “comfort food” to anyone who was ill, bereaved or otherwise needed a little cheering up. She also loved animals, especially her feline pets and strays who were pampered with lots of love. Ruby is survived by her sisters, Caroline (Lewis) Potter, Bay de Verde, NL, Catherine (George) Eddy, Sibley’s Cove, NL and Gloria Barter (Dr. David Andrews), Oakfield, NS; as well as many nieces and nephews and a devoted circle of friends. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Dr. George MacDonald; sisters, Anne Lockyer and Elsie Gourley. Cremation has taken place under the care of A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth, NS. There will be a private memorial service at a later date, according to Ruby’s wishes. No flowers by request. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society for pancreatic cancer research. A special thank you to the whole team at palliative care at the QE II VG Site, especially Devan Hennigar and as well the wonderful care givers from Newfoundland, Liz and Kim.
