McVicker, Maurice Arthur
(Oct. 14, 1927 – Sept. 6, 2013)

It is with great sadness that the McVicker family announce the passing of Maurice Arthur McVicker of Portrush, Northern Ireland, born Oct. 14, 1927, age 85. Predeceased by his mother Daisy, father Charles and brother Billy. Small as it is, his family was everything to him. Leaving with cherished memories, the love of his life, Iris, of Dungannon, Northern Ireland, son Charles, for whom he had so much pride and daughter-in-law Kelly, who he welcomed wholeheartedly into his family. The McVicker and Walker families back home in Northern Ireland always held a special place in his heart. In 1952 he graduated from medical school at Trinity College, Dublin, where he also excelled in rugby. In 1954, Maurice and Iris immigrated to Newfoundland, arriving in Bonavista eventually calling Lewisporte home for 30 years until his retirement in 1988. His love of Newfoundland was only outdone by his home in Northern Ireland and he could describe his life there as a boy as if it were yesterday. His family and friends knew him as a kind and gentle man, always thoughtful, never outspoken.

“His thoughts were slow,
His words were few,
and never formed to glisten,
But he was a joy to all his friends,
You should have heard him listen.”

Many heartfelt thanks to the staff who provided care during his stay in the Intensive Care Unit of the Health Sciences Center, St. John’s. He will be missed immensely; his memory will be cherished always. Rested at Carnell’s Funeral Home, Cremation took place with a Memorial service at Carnell’s Funeral Home on Monday, Sept. 9, 2013 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maurice’s memory to the St. John’s Healthcare Foundation.
