Florence (Flo) MacGillivray
Passed on: September 9th, 2013
MacGILLIVRAY, FLORENCE E. - Florence E. (Flo) MacGillivray of Halifax died peacefully at home Monday, September 9, 2013 in Halifax, N.S. Born February 27, 1930 in Smith's Cove, Digby County, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of George and Violet Larramore. Flo was a registered nurse for more than 40 years with 20 of those years spent as a member of nursing administration at the IWK Hospital for Children. When Flo retired from the IWK she was the assistant director of nursing for the hospital. She received her training as a nurse at the Herbert Reddy Memorial Hospital, Montreal. In 1956, she earned a teaching and supervision diploma from Dalhousie University. Flo was one of the founding organizers of the IWK Children's Miracle Telethon and was very active and devoted to that cause over the years. Always interested in sports, she enjoyed playing high school basketball before taking up golfing and curling in later years. She was a 15-year member of Hartlen Point Golf Club and an active curler for 14 years. She was a past president of the Mayflower Curling Club Day ladies division. Always community-minded, Flo served on numerous boards of directors and community committees including sitting on the board of directors of the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax. Flo was an active member of St Michael's Church since 1958. She was a founding and active member of the Catholic Women's League of Canada for St Michael's since 1969. She served as a CWL president separately at the parish, diocesan and at the provincial level. She was a National Council Life Member. Mom's first priority and love was her family. Her boys Rob, Ray and Steve loved her very much and will miss her deeply. When her husband died in 1976 with her boys all in their teens her sons all felt Flo was mother and father and was always there for them. Even though she took life seriously and excelled at anything she put her mind to, her sense of humour was never far away. Flo is predeceased by her husband, W. Harry MacGillivray, sisters: Mildred Williams (Irving), Marion Patterson (Cyril), brothers: Lloyd Larramore (Chris), Watson Larramore (Violet). She is survived by her sister Lillian McBride (Lorne); children: Robert MacGillivray (Shannon), Raymond MacGillivray (Cathy) and Stephen MacGillivray (Kara) of Fredericton; grandchildren: Matthew, Samantha, Hollie, Brittany and Katie; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of VON, Palliative Care and RJF. Special thanks to Dr. Adrienne Watson and Jacqueline LeMoine and Betty Neil who provided personal care to Mom during her illness.
The funeral will take place at St Michael's Church in Spryfield at 14 St Michaels Avenue Monday September 16, 2013. The service will begin at 10:30, there will be a meet and greet one hour prior to the service in the foyer and a reception after the service in the church hall.
