LAING, Alfred Frederick - 84 of Berwick, passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, in Grand View Manor, Berwick. Born in Kentville, he was the son of the late Lewis and Mildred (Lockwood) Laing. Alfred was employed by CP Rail his entire working career. He began an apprenticeship as a machinist in 1947 advancing in 1957 to the position of diesel inspector. Alfred was instrumental in assisting in the transition from steam to diesel engines. His career saw he and his family living in many locations; Montreal and Sherbrooke, QC, McAdam, NB, and Kentville. Alfred retired in1986 and enjoyed a long and active retirement. RV'ing and camping throughout the Maritime provinces, the New England States, Alaska, and a cross country tour of Canada. He enjoyed and shared his love of woodworking and carving. Alfred was kept busy doing woodworking projects for Anne's tole painting projects. He was an active member of his church community of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Parish and served his community volunteering for the foodbank. Alfred is survived by his loving and caring wife of 65 years, Anne (Mooy) Laing; his sons, John (Kathy Ross); Jeffrey (Susan McGregor); Peter (Krista Brydon) all of Kentville; his daughter, Patricia (Dennis Melanson), Lakeville; also surviving are his grandchildren, Sean Lacey (Katja), Berlin, Germany; Ben (Tammy), Courtenay, BC; David, Vancouver, BC; Emily (Cameron), Laconia; Andrew, Woodville; Spencer and Davlyn, Kentville; great-grandchildren, Calvin and Evelyn both of Berlin, Germany, and Michaela, Courtenay, BC.; Alfred was also loved and cherished by sisters and brothers-in-law, Ena Pineo, Maria and Walter Burke, Carol and Frank Woodworth all of Berwick; Hettie Mooy and Eddie Nichols, Kentville; Belle Mooy, Coldbrook; Dora and Mike Best, Peterborough, ON; Connie and Jan Cook, London, ON. Alfred was predeceased by older sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Burgoyne; daughter, Catherine; brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred and Gardy Killam, Leen and Trudy Nette, Gerald Pineo, Casey and Jack Mooy. The family would like to thank the staff of Grand View Manor for the wonderful care and support given to Papa while he was a resident there. No visitation by request of the family. A memorial mass was celebrated on Saturday, September 14, followed by a reception at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 120 Mill St., Berwick, beginning at 10 am., Rev. Fr. Craig Cameron officiating. Family flowers only, donations can be made to St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Parish, Berwick.
