Karen Zed

ZED, KAREN ELIZABETH ANN - It is with great sadness that the family of Karen Elizabeth Ann Zed announces her passing after a brief illness on September 19, 2013 at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick in 1952, she was the eldest daughter of Lillian and the late Peter Zed. Karen graduated in 1970 with High Honours from St. Vincent’s High School in Saint John and subsequently attended the College of Pharmacy at Dalhousie University, graduating in 1974. She was employed with Stephens’ Pharmacy in Saint John and O’Brien’s Pharmacy in Halifax for many years before joining Lawton’s Drugs as a Pharmacist Manager at the Halifax Professional Centre. Karen was a dedicated health professional serving her community working full time until the week of her death.
Karen was a committed supporter and mentor of the pharmacy students at the Dalhousie College of Pharmacy acting as a preceptor for the Practice Experience Program. She was honored to be named Alumnus of the Year in 2003. She also volunteered her time and supported pharmacy development and education on numerous committees.
Karen is survived by her mother Lillian Margaret Zed, her brothers, Peter (Martha) and Kevin (Geneva), and her sisters, Monica Walker, all of Saint John, and Ardeth Reardon (Clary), of Halifax. She had a great love for her nieces and nephews: Kathleen Zed (Andrew) and Joseph Zed both of Toronto; Peter Zed (Janet), Elizabeth Zed (Gavin), Matthew Zed, Michael Reardon, all of Halifax; Jillian Reardon of Vancouver, Tracey Walker of Saint John; Amanda Walker of Ottawa; together with her grand-niece, Sadie and grand-nephews, Benjamin and Thompson.
Visitation will be at Cruickshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, September 23 with funeral mass on Tuesday, September 24 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Theresa Parish, 6351 North Street, Halifax. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Saint John at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances to Dalhousie University College of Pharmacy Scholarship Fund or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
